Back in March, 2021 the Supreme Court of Canada rendered a decision andf ruled that the parliment acted constitutionally when it passed the federal government’s carbon pricing law.

The Supreme Court said the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, enacted in 2018, was properly a matter of national concern and had limited constitutional impact on provincial jurisdiction.

The ruling puts an end to a years-long legal attempt by the several of Canada’s provinical governments to challenge the law.

For stakeholders like us at Quantum Geothermal this decison has great significance. The judgement can easily be seen as a condemnation of the uncontrolled or irresponsible use of fossil fuels.

For everyone with an interest in accelerating the move towards the use of renewable energy in this judgement is also important because it is the strongest language to date on “climate” from any Canadian court. And of course the terminology “climate” is simply a poitically neutral way of saying “climate change”.

Thinking about the environmental and societal impact of continuing to burn natural gas and propane to heat a home is falling into disfavour. Now with this new tax system confirmed, what are the increasing cost implications for these fuels?
