Horizontal Ground Loop

In Ontario and across most of Canada horizontal ground loops are employed in the majority of all geothermal installations. A long trench is excavated to a depth of 5–6 feet (approximately 1.8 metres) and HDPE pipe is laid in the bottom of the trench, positioned across the width of the trench and then the trench is backfilled.

This horizontal loop format is commonly used since it is the most cost-effective method of installing the pipe for projects where the property is large enough. A well designed and properly installed system of piping will deliver many years of reliable service. Typically the property should be at least 1 – 2 acres in size with a relatively flat area available that is unobstructed by trees, bush or pre-existing landscaping features.

We need to avoid excavating the trenches in an area where you may want to build an outdoor pool or construct any structure that will require you to dig more than 3 feet ( 1 m) deep. Digging deeper may risk damaging the installed geothermal pipes.

We never build a ground loop in a marsh, wetland or any environmentally sensitive or protected natural areas on your property.
