Quantum Energy Solutions is a leading provider of geothermal heating and cooling systems for new homes in Southern Ontario

Hybrid Systems – Renewable Energy + Gas Fired Equipment

We will always advocate for the use of geothermal energy. We will always advocate for the use of solar energy.

When traditional and conventional heating systems (ie : furnaces and outdoor air conditioning units) are installed and put into service those furnaces burn either natural gas or propane derived from a fossil fuel source. We also advocate for the reduced use of fossil fuels in all newly built homes whenever practical.

However, on certain projects there will be reasons why a hybrid system  is the best solution we can offer. We define a hybrid system as a heating design that utilized both renewable energy and gas fired equipment. An example may be helpful here. Clients of ours designed and build their home using “mostly” geothermal heating but because of their specific needs, a gas fired boiler was also installed on the premises. In this example we installed one boiler to supply the heating for  their new driveway and front walk snowmelt system. For technical reasons related to the need for elevated output temperatures, boilers are currently the only suitable equipment to install for snow melting systems. For this project we installed one natural gas boiler and several heat pumps thereby reducing the overall consumption of natural gas in their new home while creating a hybrid heating system operating mostly on renewable energy. To conclude the example, we completed their HVAC design and prepared all required HVAC permit documentation. Later, we constructed the entire heating and cooling system, which included one gas fired boiler and 5 geothermal heat pumps. As a result the vast majority of the overall heating and cooling requirements of the house were met using renewble energy.

When do we design and build using fossil fuels?  When our clients have a specific request or requirement and sometimes simply because you can’t melt snow off an Ontario driveway in January using a 100% renewable energy system.

Designing a renewable energy heating and  cooling system for your new house doesn’t mean you can’t have a gas cooktop stove or a snow melt system for your safety and convenience. No, we just want to talk with you about all your options and listen to what you value and require to be part of your new home. That way your new home will be a built smarter, more energy efficient and more environmentally respectful.

We design and construct heating and cooling systems for new custom homes. We do that in and around Toronto and across a wide area of southern Ontario. We participate in selected projects in the Muskoka Lakes region.
Sometimes the use of fossil fuels like natural gas (CH4) or propane (C3H8) are necessary to meet the mandate and design criteria that is required within these homes.
